ARTIST’S APPROACH
Born in 1976, Nicolas Milhé lives and works in France. His works take greatly diverse forms: sculptures, monumental installations, sketches, videos, etc. His resolutely political work generally addresses symbolic forms of power and proceeds through immersion, reversal or interference to reveal or denounce the codes employed. For Art Souterrain 2019, he discreetly modified the Montréal Métro map.
THE ARTWORK
Métro de Montréal
Digital print, 2019
A perfectly normal Métro map, but for one tiny detail: North is at the bottom and South is at the top. This image gives us precise information while disrupting our habits. Beyond the playful character of this representation, the artist invites us to reflect on the symbolic scope of ordinary conventions.
