Art Souterrain is pleased to present Art and Sustainable Territories, a program developed in collaboration with the Société de développement Angus as part of the Rendez-vous Angus at Technopôle Angus.

Through exhibitions, a conference, and a screening and discussion, the program explores the connections between contemporary art, ecology, the circular economy, and territory.

Art Souterrain presents two new photographic series that explore the question of territory.

With Dormir le fjord, Vincent Drouin offers an immersive look into the little-known world of saltwater ice fishing on the Saguenay Fjord. His photographs reveal the ephemeral fishing villages that emerge each winter across the landscape.

With Mille lieues (les immergées), Éliane Excoffier blurs the boundary between submerged landscapes and shorelines. Her photographs reveal imperceptible presences and liminal spaces, somewhere between reality and imagination.

Displayed on large-scale structures placed directly on the ground, the twenty photographs appear to emerge from the urban landscape, inviting contemplation and discovery.

Mille lieues (les immergées)
A series of ten photographs, Mille lieues (les immergées) is an iteration of a work Éliane Excoffier  created during a residency at VU in Québec City in 2021. Through this body of work, the artist reveals the enigmatic delicacy of her environment.

She offers an immersion into landscapes where the boundary between what lives underwater and on land dissolves. The surface of the water no longer returns a reflection; it is a passage between porous worlds: flooded landscapes and shorelines, reality and imagination secretly intertwine. Through these threshold spaces that invite introspection, Excoffier scrutinizes the furtive, untamed, and sensual movements of natural places and captures the invisible presences teeming within them. Through their almost ghostly worlds, the images become silent traces of our coexistence with what our territory conceals from our gaze.

BIOGRAPHY
Éliane Excoffier is a Quebec visual artist based in Sutton whose practice is dedicated to contemporary photography. A graduate of the Université de Montréal in visual arts and art history, she has exhibited in Canada and internationally for more than twenty-five years. She has also extended her practice into public art, creating large-scale works through Quebec’s program for the integration of art into architecture.

At the intersection of digital and analogue practices, her photographic practice explores the possibilities of technical experimentation. Her series unfold through meticulously staged compositions in which settings, light, and subjects intertwine, bringing enigmatic narratives imbued with materiality and sensuality to life.

Dormir le fjord
With Dormir le fjord, Vincent Drouin  offers a nocturnal immersion into the curious and little-known world of saltwater ice fishing.

Every winter, thousands descend on the Saguenay Fjord to enjoy its fish-rich waters. Cabins, shelters, and tents form large ephemeral villages across the expanse of ice, surrounded by majestic headlands. With climate change and warming waters, this activity is experiencing some upheavals, and the periods during which it is safe to occupy this territory are becoming increasingly variable. The activity is at risk of disappearing.

In this series of ten black-and-white photographs, Drouin casts a vibrant gaze on this strangely alluring world, where extraordinary characters and their festive evenings coexist with surprising structures and the immensity of the cliffs lining the fjord.

BIOGRAPHY
Vincent Drouin’s artistic explorations stem from his experience of the Quebec territory and his research into points of contact between humans and nature. Through a geopoetic perspective at the intersection of science and contemplation, he documents his passage through these spaces, intersected by rivers and traces of the past, using photography and installation.

He holds a bachelor’s degree in visual and media arts from Université Laval, and his work has been presented in solo and group exhibitions. In August 2023, he began a cycle of work in the Gaspé Peninsula centred on salmon rivers, with the support of the organization Poème en août. He also received a Première Ovation grant for a book project documenting scientific actions undertaken to conserve Atlantic salmon and salmon rivers in Eastern Canada. He lives and works in Québec City.

Ariane Plante  is a writer, artist, and curator working in visual and media arts. Active in Quebec’s artistic community since 2005, she has developed and led major exhibition projects, notably for the Mois Multi festival, the Grand Théâtre de Québec, the Foire en art actuel de Québec, and Place des Arts. She has also curated numerous exhibitions, including at the Maison des arts de Laval and the Centre d’art Jacques-et-Michel-Augé, as well as in a variety of other contexts.

A recipient of grants from the Canada Council for the Arts, the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec, the Conseil des arts de Montréal, and Première Ovation, she has also served on numerous juries. Her work has been presented at festivals and exhibition venues across Quebec, Canada, and France, as well as on online platforms and in various digital publications.
