ARTIST’S APPROACH
Born in 1968, Martin Le Chevallier is an artist and filmmaker. He is also one of the Curators of UnderGround Art 2019. As an artist, he has developed a body of work around films, immersive pieces and contextual interventions. His intentionally political works portray our era with distance and humour. For UnderGround Art, he found humour in diverting objects found in the underground city from their ordinary vocations, so as to create fables in our everyday lives.
THE ARTWORK
Hello
In situ intervention, 2019
On a low table, framed by two sofas, we find a video surveillance camera globe. Why such equipment in place of a vase or a bowl of chips? Are the conversations of those using the sofas being monitored? Can there be a dialogue between visitors and this strange object? By simply shifting an object usually placed on a wall or ceiling, the presence of video surveillance in our everyday lives is suddenly brought into focus. And questioned.
