Infos
Founded in 1982 by Su Schnee and Daniel Dion, OBORO had an exhilarating start. In its first year of existence, OBORO presented no less than 20 exhibitions and events thanks to the active engagement of several artists whose objective was to offer resources and services to creators, the artistic community and the public, and to participate in the movement both locally and internationally. For the first ten years, we occupied a space on Saint-Laurent Boulevard, the cosmopolitan axis of Montreal, where exhibitions, performances, residences, and special events featured young artists from different backgrounds and cultures. varied producing ambitious and fearless works. By moving to its new premises in 1992, OBORO acquired places more conducive to the production and presentation of works in visual, media and transdisciplinary art. In 1995, in order to meet glaring needs in the community, we created the New Media Laboratory, a specific place dedicated to activities in new technologies by adapting a multifunctional studio to the needs of electronic and telecommunications media. In 2001, a major expansion project of the Laboratory took shape on the 2nd floor of the building. The New Media Laboratory, completed in the fall of 2004, has become one of the major hubs for creation and distribution in Montreal and in Canada. This includes a wide range of studios and unique resources available to members of the collective, the artistic community and the public. * The name "OBORO" appeared in a dream and appears in a poem by Claude-Marie Caron. "OBORO" evokes the ancient myth of the "ouroboros", this dragon-serpent which swallows its tail and which symbolizes transformation, renewal and a universe in continuous evolution.
