His technique is exceptionally precise, with a warm, playful and distinctive character. Shogo Okada’s work has been shown extensively in Canada and Japan, and can be found in numerous private, corporate and institutional collections, including Capital One USA, the National Bank of Canada, BMO and BAnQ.
Artistic approach
I work as a screen printer and compose music. These two practices influence each other and my aim is to reinterpret familiar shapes and structures to create compositions from a subject matter. Whether it is visual arts or music, the working process is intuitive. I begin by exploring a theme, distilling its essence, then developing manual and digital ways of approaching it. I proceed by subtraction to emphasize the fundamental value of the subject. In this way, communication remains simple and clear. I prefer abstraction because it doesn’t reveal things completely, it’s poetic and it offers space to think freely. As we perceive reality by referring to our own memories, my abstract works seek to initiate a spontaneous, vibrant and unique experience
