Farzaneh Rezaei

Montréal, Canada

Biography

Farzaneh Rezaei is an Iranian-Canadian visual artist, born in Iran in 1983. She lives and works in Montreal. In January 2021, she completed a master’s degree in visual and media arts at the University of Quebec in Montreal.

Drawing and all the experimental, intimate and expressive possibilities that characterize her take a preponderant place in her artistic practice. For Rezaei, the accessibility and the simplicity of the means of this practice make it a unique vehicle, allowing great proximity with her daily activities. Her continuous comings and goings between Montreal and Iran, her country of origin (where she goes back every year), lead her to adopt a nomad lifestyle where drawing fits “naturally”. Thus, this practice accompanies her as much in her long and shorter trips allowing her to define her perceptions of the world at all times.

In 2020, one of her drawings was acquired by the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec for the Loan Collection of Works of Art.

About the artwork

Ruptures (2019-2020)

Ruptures project is made up of a series of drawings based on the notions of rupture and fragmentation. It includes about ten compositions each bringing together three to six drawings on paper, grouped together in a configuration that is sometimes horizontal, sometimes vertical. Instead of working on a single large unified surface, Farzaneh Rezaei drew on multiple papers, placed next to each other, seeking a balance between the general unity of the whole and the uniqueness of each drawing. When several papers construct a drawing, places of great tension are established between these adjacent surfaces. The contact and break points become very active and the emphasis is on the effects of discontinuity. The multiplicity of drawing surfaces evokes geographical zones and spaces of differentiated temporalities, in a work that takes root both in the practice of drawing and in the life of the artist, especially her lived experience in the context of immigration.
