Raphaël Biscotti
Montreal, CanadaBiography
Raphaël Biscotti is originally from Val-David, in the Laurentians.
He studied in Studio Arts at Concordia University (2018). As part of the Arctic Arts and Design program, he did a one-year exchange student in Rovaniemi, Finland. He is an MFA candidate in Visual and Media Arts at UQAM. He is currently finishing the writing of his thesis.
Biscotti’s artistic approach focuses on anxiety and how it affects the imagination. The silent, slow and demanding process of drawing allows him to evacuate his worries, which are caused by a generalized anxiety disorder. His work evokes different metaphors stemming from dreamlike imagery. Care and empathy are at the center of his practice. Biscotti wishes to destigmatize anxiety through his poetic and sensitive drawings.
About the artwork
Vers une pensée-paysage (2020-2021)
Vers une pensée-paysage is a series of drawings that encounter poetic objects. Here, the artist is interested in clouds and their interpretative significance. Clouds evoke reverie and momentary absence. When we observe clouds, we can project our thoughts onto their materiality, even seeing familiar forms in them. In this sense, clouds represent a canvas for ideas. Through drawing and writing, the artist composes a series of clouds–these clouds contain the thoughts and fears caused by the present pandemic.
