Wheel of Fortune
Tim Messeiller was born in 1988 in Vevey, Switzerland. He now lives and works in Montreal, Canada. Tim Messeiller’s artistic practice is defined as multidisciplinary. Employing various mediums such as performance, textile, printmaking, drawing and sculptural installation, his work is situated at the boundary between design and art, questioning in this way the status of the artist within the artistic institution.
Artistic project : Wheel of Fortune
La Roue de la Fortune (or Wheel of Fortune) is an interactive performance that takes for its model the popular televised game show. By stepping into a kitschy cardboard decor, which is itself a complete fraud of the original, participants come unexpectedly face to face with the very real consequence of their actions: they finally have the chance to possess art simply by making a wheel turn. The objects to be won are unique and handmade locally in Montreal, Quebec. With its self-deprecating humour and sharp social critique, La Roue de la Fortune examines the network of relations that links popular visual culture, art and art history by questioning the artwork as product and attempting to make sense of the paradox that opposes the usefulness of the object and the uselessness of art.
