Vitrine sur l’Art is an initiative that was created in 2016 by Art Souterrain. It invests in unrented storefronts, in which it installs contemporary artwork, thereby transforming the spaces into temporary exhibition galleries.
Through this metamorphosis, the projet’s objective is to create a familiarity with contemporary Canadian art among Montrealers and tourists, through new exchanges and experiences in public spaces.
In autumn of 2016, a pilot project was carried out at 1000 De La Gauchetière, then the first edition in downtown Montréal was held in the summer of 2017.
Summer 2018 project
With the support of Destination centre-ville, the neighbourhood’s commercial development association; the Secrétariat à la Région Métropolitaine; and the Ville-Marie borough, for the 2ndconsecutive year, Art Souterrain installs its Vitrine sur l’Art project in the downtown Montréal sector.
The project serves to both economically revitalize the neighbourhood and initiate the general public to contemporary art, through enhancing storefronts that are advertising commercial rental space.
Our mandate is to create a dynamic, accessible and entertaining circuit, while offering a uniqueness that distinguishes our metropolis and the downtown area, and reinforces competitiveness.
For owners, this translates into:
- Increased visibility in a very animated neighbourhood
- Regular professional maintenance of storefront windows
- Installation and quick disassembly, for cases in which the space becomes rented
- A space that is accessible at all times
- Diffusion of the project (via media and social media channels)
