Artistic project : Toy Toy!
Toy Toy! was written based on a simple rhythm and a four note progression: A, B, C, E or La, Si, Do, Mi. The idea of this piece is to play around by repeating and alternating this motif and its different combinations. The resulting sound structures grow more and more complex until neither the motif nor the rhythm played by the musicians are discernable. The toy piano’s particular tone, which produces notes that do not ring completely in tune nor completely out of tune, creates surprising sounds recalling at times the mechanical piano and at others chimes or even bells. Finally, in her radical choice of the toy piano, Myriam El Haïk alludes to childhood and to the pleasure of playing. In this way, she reminds us that music can really be child’s play.
